The 10th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society forum

The 10th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society forum,was held from October 6 to 8. About 1,100 global leaders in science and technology, policy, business and media from approximately 100 countries, regions and international organizations ,who met to reflect on how to expand the “lights” and control the “shadows” of science and technology, and to discuss the two major themes of innovation and sustainability. They exchanged arguments about various themes, such as energy, medical treatment, population and a resources problem.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the opening ceremony and said “Our country needs your knowledge and expertise to request more foreign assistance in cleaning up the Fukushima No.1 power plant.” He also emphasized that “we are wide open to receive the most advanced knowledge from the world.” Furthermore he announced a Japanese government initiative, the Global Energy and Environment innovation Forum( GEEIF), to be held for the first time next October in Tokyo.

The STS forum, making its 10th anniversary this year, has evolved from a mere conference into a movement for global leaders.

The next Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society forum will be held from October 5 to 7, 2014 at ICC Kyoto.
